After remodeling my bedroom, I had to redo everything. I had to replace all of the furnishings and the treatments all around the room. The one thing I didn’t realize would be such an issue was the length of the bedroom curtains. I thought it would be easy to buy and put up standard curtains, but nothing I did looked quite right. How long are bedroom curtains supposed to be?
After some research i was able to find out what I needed to know and my curtains look great now. Hopefully I can help you do the same thing.
How Long Should Bedroom Curtains Be?
The short and easy answer is that your curtains your be floor length. They should be long enough to just barely touch the floor, but not so long that they drag on the floor or bunch up in a pile. It is a common mistake to make your curtains so long that they make piles of curtain when opened fully.
Long and Short Curtains for Bedroom

There is some nuance to this length as even a fraction too long and your curtains will not glide gracefully when you are opening and closing them, but drag on the ground and then you will have to move them with your hands to get them to close properly.
There is one exception to the curtains being long enough to nearly touch the floor. If you have a radiator or some other kind of heater in the way it may be dangerous to have your curtain hanging down that low. So you will need to have a slightly shorter curtain to give the radiator room to operate. If your curtains are draped over a radiator or heater it may be a fire hazard and you may want to consider making short curtains for bedrooms or other rooms in your house.
A deep window sill may also hinder the hang of a good curtain. A large sill can make your curtain bulge out and look strange when drawn. So a window sill like this may require you to choose a shorter curtain.
More things you need to know
Default curtain panels are sold at a variety of lengths. Typically they range from 63 to 144 inches long. If you take care to measure from the floor up, you will be able to find the height that you will need to hang your curtain rod to have a proper drape for your curtains. Whatever number you get when you measure you will want to round up to give yourself that extra touch of space that your curtains will need to glide rather than drag.
Though you want this glide you still want your curtains to come in contact with the floor, or the window sill if it is large enough. Think of this in terms of style. You wouldn’t want to wear pants that were two inches too short. That kind of style is out of date and can look pretty nerdy. The curtains that don’t make contact with the floor just look strange and can be off putting.
What about style?
There is another style of curtain length that you may choose to go for. If you want something a bit less formal, that has a bit more of a relaxed feel, you can have curtains that break slightly on the floor. These kinds of curtains do touch the floor but just slightly. If you give just one to three inches of length on the curtain you can use the curtain to hide uneven floors.
What Is The Best Length For Your Bedroom Curtain?
These longer curtains that pool on the floor a bit can be higher maintenance as they can collect dirt or fur if you have animals. They are also not ideal if you are going to be opening and closing your curtains often that extra length may give you issues. The longer style is better for curtains that are not moved as often.
As far as above your window, you want your curtains to hang far enough above the window that when they hang they cover the entire thing. If you hang them too low. The top of the window may show and that will just look strange. You want your curtains to be long enough to hang not only above your floor properly, but also to be hung above your window frame entirely.
Creating an illusion
You can even create the illusion of a taller window if you hang your curtains above your frame high enough. You can hang a rod upward to six inches above the window frame to give your window a larger feel. Though be careful that you don’t go overboard with this, hanging a rod a foot and a half above your window till just look awkward and strange.
Although these guidelines are often referred to and accepted, there are no 100% correct answers. Curtain length is a thing that can be very subjective and dependent on the room and the features of that room. You can use these rules for standard curtain lengths, but you can also go on your own and do what suits you. Ultimately it is up to you how you place your curtains, however you like them, and however they work best in your space.
Standard Curtain Lengths
There are a couple of guidelines. These guidelines essentially say that you should have your curtains start above the frame of your window and reach down to either your floor or the sill that your window has. At the floor or sill, it should be just barely above the surface.
They can also be slightly longer and bunch on the floor, but they are better for frequent opening and closing if the curtain floats above the surface. Though in the end, it is your choice. It is something you will have to live with so it is most important that it is something you love.
