I have traveled a few times with mixed success. I have had magnificent times where everything went well, and other items where nightmares. The worst thing you can find on your travels is an inadequately cleaned hotel room. It makes you wonder what the cleaning standards are for hotels. Washing sheets and pillowcases are simple enough but the conditions? Can you count on them being sufficiently washed?
If you are anything like me, you like your blankets and comforters to be well washed so you will want to know the way the hotel keeps their things clean.
Do Hotels Wash Comforters?
It is simple to strip a bed of all the sheets and pillowcases and wash them. There is more that goes into washing a comforter. To wash these on a regular basis takes more resources and time than it takes to just wash the sheets and pillowcases alone. The complicated nature of washing comforters has led to some of the hotels that like to cut corners not washing them regularly. It has been said that they are not washed between customers, but there are rumors out there of places that do not wash them at all.
Hotel Room.
The widespread word about the lack of cleanliness of comforters has created a caution against sleeping in hotel beds. The rule of thumb out there is to always remove the comforters from the beds and not to sleep with them. Many people have taken to stripping the bed of these before ever getting into the bed.
There have been reports from housekeeping services employees that suggest that in some establishments that comforters may get washed only four times a year. For mean that seems quite low. I would like for the blankets I use to be quite a bit cleaner than that. I would assume you would like you blankets to be cleaner as well.
Who knows what the people that have slept with them before you have done in that room. It is important that the things have been properly taken care of.
Since the word has spread that the blankets may not be washed in the hotels, some chains have made it a point to let you know that they do make a practice of cleaning them. The national chain, Hampton Inn, wants to steer clear of the perception that the comforters in hotel rooms are not cleaned regularly. To combat this bad press that hotels have gotten, they make sure that customers know what has been washed and cleaned. They leave sticky notes that make a point to let the customers know that the comforters have been properly washed and are fresh and clean for you when you walk in.
With this kind of dedication to having their reputation untarnished by the general thought that the cleaning is sub par in the hotel industry, you can count on them to make sure that your hotel experience will be worthwhile and as clean as can be. I know I rest better if the housekeeping staff has made that extra effort to clean the space.
Some may think that the sticky notes may be a statement that implies that other hotels do not often wash their comforters or bedspreads. Representatives of major hotels, such as the Marriott have made statements saying that they also regularly wash their comforters and that people that stay there should feel assured that everything is clean. They say that they clean everything that a guest touches.
So if a number of hotels have come out saying that they actively clean all of their bed sets, is there anything to worry about? That depends. You basically will get what you pay for. If you are willing to pay for a good room in a well-known and well-established chain of hotels, you are likely going to have much less to worry about.
If you are looking for bargains, you may have more issues. Cheaper hotels and hotels that are not as established may have more sketchy practices. It is your discretion on what you are comfortable with, but people tend to say when it comes to hotels, you get what you pay for. This is not saying that they absolutely do have worse practices.
You can always outright ask an establishment what their practices are. Hopefully, they would be honest and tell you the truth. If you don’t trust the hotel to tell the truth, I would recommend you err on the side of safety. Inspect the comforter and if it does not appear to be well washed then, you may be safer just removing it from the bed and sleeping without it.
Under The Covers
Hotels have a reputation for not being as clean as they could be. You may want everything to be as washed as possible, but as a cost and time-saving method, many placed will bypass the cleaning of some elements. One of the common elements often left unwashed is the comforters or other larger bedspreads. Some former housekeeping staff has reported that they were instructed to never change out the comforter between guests.
Some hotels answered the rumors of lack of cleanliness in hotels with notes assuring guests that the bedspreads were thoroughly washed and taken care of. Others have come out in the press to state the cleanliness of their bed sets. In the end, though you will get what you pay for and if you are uncomfortable with a dirty cover, maybe you would be safer avoiding any in a place you are not 100% certain are clean.
