Buying a new mattress is exciting, especially if you’re looking for a top-of-the-line model. The Leesa Reserve mattress is one such example, designed to deliver all the right features for a good night’s sleep.
That all sounds good, but of course, we had to test it for ourselves to see if the Reserve mattress lives up to these expectations. Specifically, we tried the Medium model, which we think could appeal to solo sleepers and couples alike who enjoy a more nuanced, unique design from their mattress.

Pros
Luxurious craftsmanship – At first glance, you can see how well-made the Reserve mattress appears. The craftsmanship truly makes this mattress look and feel luxurious.
Three firmness options – Leesa Reserve comes in three firmness options, which means it can accommodate all kinds of sleepers.
Unique design – This mattress is a two-piece, featuring a comfort insert and an encased support base. You can find the transition layer in between the two inserts.
Cons
High price – This is a luxurious mattress in every sense of the word, so the price might not be such a surprise. Nonetheless, it’s on the higher end of the spectrum, with a queen being over $2,500.
Shorter trial – This bed comes with a 100-night trial, which meets industry standards, but some people might feel like it could’ve been longer, given the price of the bed.
Leesa Reserve Mattress Performance Ratings
How the Leesa Reserve Compares
Here at Sleep Advisor, we’ve tested over 150 different mattresses. The Reserve mattress outperforms the average mattress in motion isolation, cooling, and edge support. It’s also taller than the average bed at 14 inches high.

Who We Recommend the Leesa Reserve For:
- Hot sleepers – This mattress comes with a cooling cover, which will help keep the surface cool for those who sleep hot.
- Back sleepers – The Medium Leesa Reserve provides solid support to keep your shoulders and hips aligned when you sleep on the back.
- Combination sleepers – Although it doesn’t have much bounce, you’re unlikely to feel stuck in this mattress. Switching positions should be easy enough, based on our experience testing this bed.
Who We Don’t Recommend the Leesa Reserve For:
- Side sleepers – The Medium model was a tad too firm for side sleepers. Our testers felt a little pressure buildup on their shoulders in this position, so side sleepers might want to try the softer version.
- Heavy sleepers – Heavy sleepers need maximum support, and this Medium mattress might not be firm enough to provide this. Luckily, the Leesa Reserve mattress is also available in Firm, which might work better for heavy sleepers, especially those who enjoy sleeping on their stomachs.
Customer Reviews of the Leesa Reserve Mattress
The Leesa Reserve mattress scores 5 out of 5 stars on Leesa’s official website, but there are only two reviews there since this is a newer bed. Both customers who left their reviews are happy with the mattress, so there’s not much more we can add at this time. They said it’s great at cooling and helps them sleep without any aches and pains.
Testing the Leesa Reserve Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
To review the Leesa Reserve Hybrid, we had testers use both objective data and subjective experiences. We tried out this mattress for back, side, and stomach sleeping and evaluated it in performance categories like cooling, support, pressure relief, and more. These tests were what we used to then provide scores for each category, and together, these scores helped determine our overall rating for the mattress.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6.5/10 (Medium model)
We usually score mattresses on a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The Medium Leesa Reserve falls at 6.5 out of 10, which we’d call a true medium feel.
However, you should be mindful of how a mattress feels to different body types and weights. Heavier people are likely to sink deeper, in which case they might prefer the firmer model for added support. Those under 130 pounds may want to look at the softer model for more pressure relief. On the other hand, the medium is a good middle ground for those who want a little bit of everything.
We’ve created the chart below to help you match your sleeping position to the ideal Leesa Reserve firmness option.
SLEEPING POSITION | BEST LEESA RESERVE FIRMNESS OPTION |
Side Sleeper | Soft and Medium |
Back Sleeper | Medium |
Stomach Sleeper | Medium and Firm |
Combination Sleeper | Medium |
How Does the Leesa Reserve Mattress Feel?
This Leesa feels like a true medium, combining both coils and foam layers to relieve pressure while keeping your body aligned. There’s very little bounce, probably due to all the comfort layers. However, this shouldn’t make it difficult to switch positions since the mattress doesn’t trap you in the foam.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
Leesa Reserve has a weight limit of up to 1,000 pounds or 500 pounds on each side.
Side Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | This Leesa mattress should feel good for side sleepers under 130 pounds thanks to its contouring comfort layers. Nonetheless, some might prefer the softer version for a bit more cushioning around the shoulders and hips. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Our average-weight tester did feel a bit of pressure buildup on the shoulders, which is why we recommend they try out the softer model as well. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | We believe those between 230 and 300 pounds should feel comfortable enough sleeping on the Leesa Reserve. People heavier than this, though, might prefer the firmer option. |
Back Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Our lightweight tester was happy with how this Leesa feels for back sleepers. It provides just enough support with some cushioning for the hips. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Average-weight back sleepers need a balanced feel for support and pressure relief, which is exactly what we think the Leesa Reserve provides. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Heavier back sleepers should find enough support, but some might need a bit more, in which case we’d recommend the firmer model. |
Stomach Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Even the Medium model works great for lightweight stomach sleepers because it naturally feels firmer for them. They should get plenty of support to prevent the hips from sinking. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Average-weight stomach sleepers might prefer the firmer model, depending on their exact weight. Our tester said the bed felt fine, but this is likely not enough for dedicated stomach sleepers. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Stomach sleepers over 230 pounds should look at the firmer model or an entirely different mattress built specifically for this group. |
We typically gauge pressure relief by evaluating how the mattress feels in different positions, as well as using a pressure map to see if there’s any actual buildup in areas like the shoulders and hips.
While the mattress did a good job at body contouring, our average-weight tester felt some pressure buildup in the shoulders, which is why we gave the mattress a 4 instead of 5. Those looking for more relief might consider the softer model instead.

Is the Leesa Reserve Good for Pain Relief?
We think this Leesa mattress has a lot going for it in terms of pain relief as it combines coils with foam to deliver a balance of pressure relief and support. However, the level of comfort you’ll experience depends on the type of pain you’re dealing with as well as your preferred sleeping position. This bed comes in three firmnesses, one of which would probably be good for pain relief targeting your specific needs.
Back Pain | The Leesa Reserve does a good job of keeping your body aligned so the hips don’t sink too much. As a result, this may help people with back pain sleep better and prevent it from worsening. The only exception here could be for stomach sleepers, who may want the Firm model to keep their lower back from hyperextending. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | While the Medium Leesa might work great for some, others may want to look at the softer version that provides more contouring around the hips. The Medium model we tested has a more balanced feel, which means it should be good for back sleepers with hip pain. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | Since we experienced some pressure buildup when testing this bed for side sleepers, those with shoulder pain might want to look at the softer version. If not, try to sleep on your back to prevent buildup. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support is crucial to keep folks in a healthy sleeping posture. And while this hybrid mattress has sturdy coils and a firmer feel, some people might still prefer the Firm model over the Medium one for even more support.
We felt supported enough testing this bed for side and back sleeping, experiencing just enough contouring so that the hips stay aligned with the shoulders. However, stomach sleepers might want more support for their hips, which is why we deducted a point here.
Motion isolation is usually important to couples because it prevents movement from transferring from one side to the other. This can help you achieve uninterrupted sleep if your partner is a restless sleeper who tosses and turns all night.
In the case of the Leesa Reserve, we feel like the foam layers are doing their absolute best job based on our testing. There are three of them, plus the transition layer, absorbing movement so that you can’t feel it on your side of the bed.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
This Leesa mattress has a cooling cover that’s meant to stay cool throughout the night, and while it does stay cool to the touch, it’s important to note that this mattress has four foam layers, which are probably going to retain some heat.
If you’re an extremely hot sleeper, you might want something with fewer foam layers. This is mainly why we didn’t give it a perfect 5 here.
Bounce is an important factor for combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and people with mobility issues. This is because a bouncy, responsive mattress can make it easier to reposition. We test bounce by dropping a weighted ball on the mattress to see how much it bounces back. In the case of the Leesa Reserve, there’s very little to no bounce, which we think is probably due to all the foam on top of the coils. If bounce is an important feature for you, look at the Leesa Original, which performed much better in our testing for this.
Good edge support makes you feel more secure when sleeping near the edge of the bed. It also helps if you usually sit in this area to tie your shoes or get ready for the day.
The Leesa Reserve has a reinforced perimeter, but you might still sink a little through the foam layers. Overall, though, we still felt secure, which is why we’d recommend this mattress to those who want a bed with strong edges for sleeping or sitting.
In this category, we look at what extras the mattress and/or brand bring to the table.
The Leesa Reserve is unique in the way it’s constructed, featuring two separate pieces you bring together after they arrive in two separate boxes. Additionally, the mattress has a cooling cover and zoned support, for more temperature regulation at the surface and targeted support. Plus, we love that customers can choose among three firmness levels to better accommodate their unique needs.
While this Leesa bed offers up an innovative design, it doesn’t have free white glove delivery considering how costly it is, which is why we took off a half point here.
Leesa is an established, reputable brand that is easy to work with. You can reach them via email or online chat if you need a quick answer to any question regarding mattresses, shipping, warranty, and more.
The reason why we gave it a 4 instead of 5 is the length of the trial and warranty. This is a pricey mattress, and for the price, they could’ve added a longer trial at least. Some cheaper mattresses have lifetime warranties and a year-long trial.
Performance for Couples
4/5
We consider a mattress great for couples if it does well at overall support, cooling, motion isolation, edge support, and bounce. We also like to see beds that have a high weight capacity for two people as well as a versatile medium or medium-firm feel.
This Leesa mattress performed well at all this except for bounce, which could be a drawback for couples who don’t want to feel awkwardly stuck during sex. Because of its lack of bounce, we gave the Leesa Reserve a 4 out of 5 for couples.
Preference-Based Features
Zoned Support
Zoned support means the bed’s coils are zoned to provide different levels of support in different areas. For example, they’re stronger in the hip area to ensure this part doesn’t sink too deeply since we carry more weight here.
Innovative Two-Part Design
We’ve never seen this before, and it’s pretty cool that Leesa came up with it. The two-piece design combines the comfort part with foam layers and the support part with the coils. You bring the two together with a zipper because the 14” mattress would’ve been too hard to compress into a single shipping box.
Handles for Easier Transport
Not every mattress has handles, but those that do are notoriously easier to move around. This mattress is 14 inches tall and can be quite heavy, depending on the size you choose. The handles make it much easier to move around, rotate, or carry from one room to the other.
Construction: What’s Inside the Leesa Reserve Mattress?
This 14-inch tall mattress is among the tallest options out there, and because it has such high-density layers on top of strong coils, it was complicated for the company to ship. This is why they came up with the two-piece design, shipping the two layers in two separate boxes.
The construction starts with a cool-to-the-touch cover infused with cooling fibers to maintain an ideal temperature for a good night’s sleep.
- The memory foam comfort layer is made from ultra-high-density memory foam designed to adapt to the shape of your body, which should help with pressure relief.
- The memory foam contour layer is also a high-density material but is designed to provide deeper body contouring and support.
- The restorative support layer is made from high-density memory foam to help enhance motion isolation.
- The transition layer is made from foam and is meant to ease you into the coils underneath so you can feel their benefits without actually feeling them on your body.
- The zoned support layer has up to 1,032 reinforced coils to ensure proper body alignment and a healthy sleep posture.
- The stability layer acts as the high-density base that enhances the bed’s durability and the stability of all the layers above.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Unboxing is unique for this mattress since you have to unbox two packages rather than just one. First, you should unbox the support part before you get to the comfort part. Place the support part on the bottom and the comfort part on top, and then connect them with the zipper.
The process itself can be a little time-consuming due to how thick and heavy each insert is, but if you can get a friend or family member to help, it should make the process a little smoother. If not, you can opt for white glove delivery, which means professionals will set up the bed for you.
You might notice some off-gassing smells, but these should dissipate in a day or two.
Certifications
- GREENGUARD Gold – This certification helps identify products with verified low chemical emissions. This means that the product helps improve indoor quality.
- CertiPUR-US® – A CertiPUR-US® certification means the foams don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Leesa Reserve Mattress FAQs
No, Casper and Leesa are two separate mattress brands that make foam and hybrid beds.
Leesa recommends that you wait several hours before sleeping on your new mattress. These beds are delivered in a box and take some time to decompress before you can fully enjoy them.
Leesa recommends you rotate their beds every three to six months. This can help with more even wear and tear as you use your mattress.
Hybrids can often be heavier because they have more materials in them, which can make these mattresses harder to lift. Another downside is that hybrids often cost more, but this is usually because of their more advanced design.

Our Verdict of the Leesa Reserve Mattress
This mattress performed well for us in numerous categories, including motion isolation, cooling, edge support, and overall support. The downsides to the Leesa Reserve are that the Medium model may not be firm enough for stomach sleepers, and it doesn’t have much bounce to it.
It also involves a little more work to set it up since it comes in two parts. This may or may not be a dealbreaker for some, but it’s worth pointing out. Overall, this unique luxury mattress earned a 4.1 out of 5.
