Octave is a Canadian mattress brand that specializes in all-foam beds. Of their three models – the Vista, Mirage, and Horizon – the Vista is their most popular and basic model.
Here, I’ll share my testing experience with the Octave Vista in categories from support and pressure relief to motion isolation and bounce. Spoiler alert, this medium-firm foam bed has amazing motion isolation, so it’s a great option for sensitive sleepers sharing the bed. But I’ll get to all that in more detail in this complete review of the Octave Vista mattress.

Our Recommendation
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types:
Back Sleeping
Ideal for lightweight and average weight back sleepers.
Side Sleeping
Ideal for average weight and heavyweight side sleepers.
Pros
Excellent motion isolation – Because of its all-foam construction, I could barely feel any movement on the other side of the bed.
Medium-firm – Medium-firm beds tend to work well for the majority of body types and sleep positions.
Great spinal support for most – Average to heavyweight sleepers should feel well supported on this bed.
Cons
Too firm for lightweight sleepers – Lightweight sleepers may experience a bit of pressure buildup when lying on this since they won’t sink down into its top layer as much.
Little to no bounce – Since this bed has that traditional, slow-sinking feel, it’s not very responsive. It was a bit difficult to switch sleeping positions.
Not ideal for hot sleepers – This bed holds onto some body heat and doesn’t feel cool to the touch.
Octave Vista Mattress Performance Ratings
How the Octave Vista Compares
Here at Sleep Advisor, we’ve tested over 150 different mattresses. The Octave Vista outperformed the average mattress in motion isolation and edge support. It’s also slightly taller than the average bed, cheaper, and has a longer trial period.

Who I Recommend the Octave Vista For:
- Average to heavyweight sleepers – Sleepers somewhere between 130 and 230 pounds are in the sweet spot for the Octave Vista. These sleepers should sink into the top foam layer just enough to benefit from this bed’s pressure-relieving and spinal-supporting features.
- Couples – If you’re bothered by your partner’s tossing and turning, the Octave Vista might be a good fit for you. It uses slow-moving foam that does an excellent job isolating motion. I could barely feel my testing partner’s movements on the other side of the bed.
- Back sleepers – From lightweight to heavyweight sleepers, the most comfortable position on this mattress was back sleeping. In fact, I’d say this is one of the best Canadian mattresses for average-weight back sleepers.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Octave Vista For:
- Combination sleepers – Since the foam in this bed is so sinking, it really doesn’t offer much for combination sleepers; it’s pretty difficult to move from position to position on the Vista. Instead, I’d recommend one of these bouncier beds, ideal for combination sleepers.
- Hot sleepers – Even though the Octave Vista was designed “to give you cooler” sleep, it’s still an all-foam bed and it does tend to trap heat. If you sleep especially hot, you’ll want a bed with advanced cooling features, or one that includes springs for breathability. These top cooling mattresses are a great place to start.
Customer Reviews of the Octave Vista Mattress
With over 6,000 customer reviews, the Octave Vista rates 4.7 out of 5 stars on Octave’s website. One common complaint customers have is that the Octave’s firmness was not what they expected; it was either too firm or too soft. Others praise the bed for its easy setup and comfort.
Testing the Octave Vista Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
In order to get a good overall picture of the Octave Vista, I used specific tests for categories including pressure relief, support, motion isolation, cooling, edge support, and bounce. I then used the results from these tests to rate the Octave in each performance category.
Since I’m a lightweight sleeper, I also had two teammates test out the bed with me This way, we’d know how the bed performed for lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers alike.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6.5/10
I rated the all-foam Octave Vista a 6.5 out of 10 in terms of mattress firmness. This puts this bed squarely in the “medium-firm” category, meaning it’s a good option for the majority of sleepers.
How Does the Octave Vista Mattress Feel?
When I first lay on this mattress, it felt pretty firm, but the longer I was there, the more the foam contoured to my body and softened. Ultimately, the bed has the slow-sinking feeling of classic memory foam and little to no bounce. It also initially feels temperature-neutral to the touch but starts to feel a bit warm after a while.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Octave, the weight limit for the Vista mattress is 250 pounds per person or 500 pounds total.
Side Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | This bed felt a little too firm for me on my side. There was a slight buildup of pressure around my shoulder. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Our average-weight mattress tester felt a decent level of comfort and saw nearly perfect spinal alignment on their side. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | This bed was a great match for our heavyweight tester when side sleeping. They felt amazing pressure relief and spinal alignment. |
Back Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | This bed provided a good combination of comfort and support, though it did take a minute for the foam to mold around my lower back. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Our average-weight tester felt like this was a great combination of comfort and support; “One of the best Canadian mattresses for back sleepers.” |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | On their back, our heavyweight tester sank down a little but still felt comfortable. That said, they wouldn’t recommend the Octave Vista for heavier back sleepers with back pain. |
Stomach Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | I didn’t have too much hip sinkage in this position and felt like my spine was well lifted and aligned. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | The Vista was a bit too soft for our average-weight tester to feel comfortable on their stomach. Their hips sank down into the bed slightly. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Our heavyweight tester felt way too much hip sinkage to feel comfortable in this position. |
A bed with good pressure relief can help you from feeling uncomfortable pain in areas like the hips and shoulders. This is especially important for side sleepers since their weight is concentrated in a smaller area. When we tested it, our average-weight tester and I experienced a little pressure buildup in the shoulders, but I’d say, overall, we had great results with the Octave Vista.

Is the Octave Vista Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
In my experience, the Octave Vista is a good option for those with back, hip, or shoulder pain – depending on their body type. For example, as a lightweight sleeper, I felt some shoulder discomfort when lying on my side but was very comfortable on my back and stomach.
Back Pain | This bed should help minimize back pain for light and average-weight back sleepers, as well as petite stomach sleepers, by providing ample body support for a healthy spine alignment. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | I’d recommend this bed for average to heavy-weight side sleepers with hip pain. It contours nicely to the hip and keeps the spine perfectly aligned. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | Lightweight side sleepers should avoid this bed if they have shoulder pain since it’ll be just a bit too firm. But for average to heavyweight sleepers, the slow-moving foam should relieve pressure around the shoulder nicely. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Even though this bed is made entirely of foam, it still feels very supportive for most sleepers. This is likely due to its four-layer construction, which includes top layers of softer, more contouring foam, and a bottom layer of multi-zoned support foam for more targeted support to heavier and lighter areas.
When testing this bed’s support, we saw perfectly straight spines for average and heavyweight testers. Lightweight sleepers, like myself, may feel their hips sink down a bit more than their shoulders do, creating a slight curve in the spine.
Motion isolation is going to be helpful if you sleep beside someone who tosses and turns a lot. The more a bed absorbs movements, the less likely you’ll feel this on your side of the bed.
To test this bed’s motion isolation, another tester and I moved around on the mattress to see if we could feel any impact from the other person’s movements. We also used a seismograph app to record any movement disturbances.
We could barely feel a thing as the other person tossed and turned thanks to the bed’s thick, slow-moving foam layers. Even though the seismograph reading shows some spikes, I still feel confident giving this bed a 5 because of our experience on it.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
3/5
Aside from simply feeling the bed, I used a temperature gun to more accurately measure how the mattress’s temperature changed in real-time.
All told, this mattress did an okay job with cooling – I’ve seen foam mattresses that have done better and worse. Even though the company advertises the cover as “cooling” and it has cooling features like copper and phase-change technology – the bed didn’t feel cool to the touch. It also rose nearly 8 degrees after being on it for five minutes, which isn’t the worst out there, but we’ve seen mattresses only heat up 5 degrees or less in some cases.
If you tend to sweat at night, you’d probably do better with one of these mattresses for hot sleepers.
Bounce can be a useful feature in a mattress if you’re somebody who changes positions a lot through the night since this can make it easier to move around the mattress. As you might imagine, this is also a helpful feature for anyone with limited mobility or sexually active couples.
When testing for bounce, we drop a ball on the bed to see how much it bounces back. We also move around on the mattress to see how easy repositioning is.
Ultimately, this bed was not very responsive. Due to its traditional, slow-sinking feel, it was a little difficult to change positions, which is why it only got a 2 here.
Edge support measures how well a mattress’s edges support your weight while lying near or sitting in this area. This is important so that sleepers can comfortably use the entire surface of the mattress.
To test the Octave Vista’s edge support, I sat on the edge of the bed for a minute and then lay on the mattress’s edge for another minute. I experienced some sinkage when sitting on the edge, but as far as memory foam mattresses go, I was overall impressed, but I still took off a point for the sinkage I noticed while seated.
When we talk about “accessibility,” we’re talking about ways the brand and mattress itself stand out among other mattresses on the market. In the case of Octave as a brand, the company offers free shipping within most parts of Canada (but not outside of Canada), as well as a 15-year warranty and a year-long sleep trial. The mattress also comes with one free gift, like two pillows or a set of sheets. Plus, returns are free of charge.
On the other hand, Octave doesn’t have a white glove delivery option, and the Vista does not include handles, which would make it a bit easier to set up and maneuver. For these reasons, I deducted a point here.
I was pretty impressed with Octave’s customer service overall. Customer service reps are available every day of the week, typically from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. EST. You can also email them at [email protected].
However, the website indicates that an email response may take between one to five business days, and I didn’t see any live chat option on the website, which we often see on competitors’ sites. For these reasons, I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 here.
Performance for Couples
3.5/5
Couples looking for a mattress should appreciate the Octave Vista’s amazing motion isolation. Its slow-moving foams make it nearly impossible to detect movement from the other side of the bed. It also has a medium-firm feel, which is typically a good middle-ground feel for couples.
This bed also scores well in other important categories for couples, like overall support and edge support. Strong edges mean that the couple should be able to use the entire surface of the bed, and strong support means the mattress is less likely to sag over time, even with two people regularly using it.
I docked a point and a half because of this bed’s lackluster performance at cooling and bounce, which could make it less enjoyable for sex and create more heat retention. It also doesn’t have as high of a weight capacity as other beds out there, which could impact heavier co-sleepers.
Preference-Based Features
Adjustable Base Compatible
This mattress will work with an adjustable bed frame. Octave recommends you buy their Adjustable Bed with this mattress, which can be easily added on at checkout, but if you’re looking to shop around, you can also check out our list of best adjustable bed frames.
Classic Memory Foam Feel
This bed has that slow-sinking, squishy memory foam feel. It’s not for everyone; but if you love feeling like your mattress is giving you a bit of a hug at night and you don’t easily overheat, I think this is a good option for you.
Made in Canada
This mattress is made in Canada and ships for free throughout most of Canada. The company has a list of remote regions where you’ll have to pay a small fee for shipping.
Construction: What’s Inside the Octave Vista Mattress?
The Octave Vista is a 12-inch-tall mattress with three layers of foam and is topped off with a CryoFusion™ Cooling Nanofibre Cover. This cover is meant to keep you cooler throughout the night, and while it doesn’t exactly feel cool to the touch, it does feel soft and temperature neutral.
- The top layer is made up of 2 inches of CopperGel™ Memory Foam plus PolarMAX® High-Performance Memory Foam. The copper in the mix is meant to pull heat away from you while the PolarMAX® phase-change infusion is meant to keep your body at a comfortable temperature all night.
- The middle layer includes 2 inches of Premium Elastex® Foam. This layer contours to the body and provides cushioning for sensitive joints like the hips and shoulders.
- The bottom layer is made up of 8 inches of Multi-Zone Support Foam with air channels. This high-density foam helps keep the spine in alignment and gives the mattress its overall shape and durability.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Octave Vista will arrive at your door compressed and rolled up into a big box. You’ll pull out this rolled up mattress, lay it on your bed frame, and then carefully remove the plastic encasing. Because the mattress can be heavy and doesn’t have handles, we recommend having a friend or family member help you move it around.
Once the plastic has been removed, the mattress will begin to expand to its full height. This process can take about 30 minutes, and you may notice an initial off-gassing smell. This smell is typical of bed-in-a-box mattresses and should dissipate within a couple of days. To help speed along this process, you should leave the bed in a well-ventilated room and avoid putting on bedding until the smell is gone.
Certifications
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 – This means that any textiles within the mattress don’t contain any harmful toxins or chemicals.
- CertiPUR-US® – This certification ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions.

My Verdict of the Octave Vista Mattress
After carefully testing this bed, I would recommend the Octave Vista for certain sleepers. The one sleep position this mattress did unanimously well on for each body type was back sleeping, so back sleepers of any size should like this one. As far as side sleeping, I wouldn’t recommend this one for very petite folks, but lightweight people are probably the only group that will feel comfortable on it for stomach sleeping.
This mattress has that traditional “sinking” feel of a memory foam bed. So if you love that contouring feel, or you sleep next to a restless partner, this is a great option for you.
If, however, you love a bed with some bounce, sleep especially hot, or you’re a stomach sleeper above 130 pounds, I’d recommend a hybrid mattress that also includes springs for extra support, bounce, and breathability.
