Privacy is very important. Privacy is especially important in your private spaces such as your bedroom. I know that I enjoy the security of having a bedroom door lock. Even if there is no one in the house, it is an extra level of security.
I can imagine that this is even more of a concern when you live with more people like family or roommates. Your space has to be safe and private. But what options are there for bedroom locks? I have found that there are many different kinds of locks that you can use to keep your bedroom locked up and secure.
There are different classes of bedroom locks. There are some that are designed to be permanently fixed onto the door and are part of the structure. There are others that can be used on any door. The majority of locks that are used in bedrooms are built directly into the handle of the door itself. Below is a rundown of the kinds of locks you can choose from for your bedroom door.

Knob Locks
Knob locks are the kind of locks that are located inside of a round door knob. There are a few varieties of these knob locks.
- There are push button locks that lock when you push a button in the center of the knob. The door unlocks when the inside door knob is turned so it can open from the inside.
- There are button locks on some handle knobs as well. Knobs and handles also can have a turnable tab in the knob or handle that works much the same as the button. These locks work by stopping the knob from one side from engaging when turned. Unlike other locks that bind the door to the wall, this one simple stops the knob from being turned.
While these can be great to maintain privacy, these kinds of locks are terrible when it comes to security. Many of these kinds of locks can be unlocked from the other side through a small hole in the center of the knob. Even for those that cannot be unlocked this way, the lock mechanism is entirely located in the knob.
If you happen to be in a situation where you need to keep someone out, these locks are very vulnerable. They can be knocked out of the door and at that point are useless. A door knob is not the hardest thing in the world to break or knocked out of a door. In the end, these locks are best for privacy and not for security.
Chain
A chain lock is a bedroom lock that does not require a special knob or installation. This is a simple chain that is connected to the wall next to the door with an end that can connect to a latch that is attached to the door. These locks let the door open slightly before catching and stopping entry.
They are not incredibly strong locks so they may not be great for security, but do stop entry. Because the door does open slightly, whoever is at the door may be able to see into the room a bit, but it is still ok for privacy. The opening of the door can be a benefit if you are willing to have a conversation face to face with someone but still want to stop them from entering the room.
Deadbolts
Deadbolts are most often found on outside doors because of their security quality. These locks slide a thick bar into the wall, barring the door closed. The strength of the deadbolt is high in comparison with most other kinds of locks.
To get through a deadbolt style lock, you will have to work through the door itself, the wall, or the bar that the deadbolt uses. All of these options are difficult. It may be strange seeing a deadbolt on an inside door; it is not completely unheard of.
Many deadbolts require a key from one side and have a thumb turn on the other. If t door has a window like outside doors, it can be easy to break the glass, reach in and turn the lock to open. This is less common on bedroom doors as most do not have windows. Even still, the thumb turn can be a security issue if that is something you are concerned about.
A deadbolt with a thumb turn is called a single cylinder. A double cylinder lock requires a key from both sides. This reduces the security issues but can be inconvenient if you don’t want to carry keys or need to lock it in a hurry or in a situation where your keys are unavailable.
Jimmy Proof Deadbolts
This kind of lock is a surface mount lock that works similar to the deadbolt but is not inside of the door. It is mounted like a chain but has the strength of the deadbolt attaching the door to the wall through mounts. Lots of people like these kinds of locks because they don’t require a specialized door or modifications to the door. There are very rarely found on inside doors but are not out of the question.
Hook Locks
Not all rooms have the same kinds of doors. While typically you will find a bedroom with a standard hinged door, there are variations. One of these variations is a pocket door. These doors slide open rather than swing open like most doors. This can make locking these doors an interesting challenge. If your bedroom has one of these pocket doors, the best way to lock them may be a hook lock. These locks are metal hooks that come out of the door and latch onto a bar in the frame.
Safe And Sound
There are plenty of locks that can keep people out of your bedroom. The most common are built right into the knob or handle of your door. These are not the most secure, but still do their job of keeping people out. There are more secure options such as deadbolts. Deadbolts do a great job of making a space secure. Even if you have unorthodox styles of doors, there are locks that are available to keep the door locked.
Reasons Why You Might Want a Bedroom Door Lock
There are a number of reasons why you may want a lock on your bedroom door. Many people just enjoy the privacy that a bedroom door lock can provide. This is especially true if you live with a large number of people, or if you live with roommates who may not be related to you. Sometimes a bit of privacy is needed.
A bedroom door lock can also provide a safe place in the house. It can sometimes be beneficial to have a select room in the house as a safe place in case of an emergency. For example, if someone broke into the house, a bedroom door lock would provide the safety needed to lock yourself away from any potential danger.
