Stains are your common enemy when doing laundry and there are different ways to remove them on clothes. Unfortunately, it’s not the same when the stain is on your down comforter. Let’s also assume that it’s your favorite comforter.
Before anything else, keep in mind that stain removers can damage the linen if not handled properly. This means that carelessly spot cleaning the down comforter may not only damage the outer shell. You may also damage the down and feathers inside the shell.
Hence, you made the right choice in reading this article. Now let us begin.
First Treatment
Grab your preferred liquid detergent. I suggest using detergent without enzymes and color. You only need a clear and colorless detergent.
Apply and rub the liquid detergent on the stain. Let it settle for 10 – 15 minutes. This is enough for the detergent to solubilize the stain for easier removal.
After 10 or 15 minutes, rinse the stained area with the use of warm water. After rinsing, you will notice the stain becoming lighter.
Second Treatment

Now that you managed to remove the first layer of the stain, it is time to bring it to the minimal level. You need a bleach gel for the second pre-treatment. Don’t use ordinary bleach because it may damage the shell of the down comforter. Consider the bleach gel as the lighter version of your ordinary bleach.
Let the bleach gel sit for one minute before rinsing it away from the stained area. You will see great improvements after rinsing the bleach gel away. However, it is important to make sure that the down comforter is completely free of stain. To do that, you need to let the previously stained area dry first.
Remember that residue of stain or marks is not clearly visible on a damp or wet area. Therefore, it is vital to let the area dry and recheck it again later.
In case that there’s still stain on the fabric, then repeat the second treatment procedure using a bleach gel. Don’t forget to rinse the gel after one minute. Letting the bleach gel sit for more than a minute will lead to a permanent yellow mark on the fabric.
After you confirm the removal of stain, you may now go to the final treatment.
Final Treatment
Bring your down comforter to a nearby laundromat. You can do it at home if you have a large front-doored washing machine. Load the down comforter inside the washing machine and use your preferred laundry detergent.
Keep in mind that washing the down comforter is extremely important. Some detergent or bleach may have been present still in the fabric or filling. You can only remove them completely by washing the entire comforter.
After washing, dry your down comforter using a commercial dryer. Don’t forget to put some tennis balls inside the dryer to keep the down comforter fluffy. Put each tennis ball inside a sock to prevent your down comforter from acquiring the color of the tennis balls.
