Thread count plays a major role when it comes to down comforters. It defines the comfort and durability of the comforter.
By definition, thread count refers to a number of threads within every square inch of the fabric. The amount and weight of the material used for the fabric depend on the amount of thread count. The higher the thread count is, the more material it can carry. However, the real question is whether we should keep the thread count in mind or not.
3 Types of Thread Count
There are 3 classifications of thread count that you should keep in mind. They are as follows:
• Low Thread Count
• Medium Thread Count
• High Thread Count
The low thread count ranges from 300 to 500. The fabric with this thread count is very soft even after the first wash of the bedding. Down comforters that fall under this classification is thin and light. The weight of the comforter is around 4 to 5 pounds. The comforter’s durability is basic which means that the life of the bedding depends on the manufacturer and how you maintain it.
The medium thread count ranges from 500 to 800. The fabric is very soft even after several washes. The comforter has average weight and thickness – around 6 to 7 pounds. Compared to light thread count, comforters that have medium thread count are more durable.
The high thread count ranges from 1000 to 1500. Comforters with high thread count are the thickest and heaviest products in the industry. The weight of these comforters ranges from 9 to 10 pounds. They are also the most durable beddings you can find.
Insulating Prowess
The insulating efficiency of the comforters highly depends on the thread count as well. As what I’ve already said, the higher the thread count, the more material it can hold. This also means that higher thread count comforters can insulate more heat than the lighter thread count comforters.
Hence, you should go for the highest thread count comforter available if you are living at the northern sections of Canada. This will give you comfortable insulation even during the coldest winter night. If you find yourself at the Sahara Desert, however, then the lightest thread count comforter is your perfect choice. It will give you the same comfort with the right insulation at night.
On the other hand, if the temperature in your place is neither that of North Canada nor that of Sahara Desert; then you should go for the middle thread count instead. Such comforters will give you enough warmth at night and the comfort of sleeping while covered by soft smooth silk.
Please be reminded that the durability of the material depends on how frequent you wash the comforter. Down comforters need only to be maintained at least once a year. More than that might damage the materials, as well as the insulating ability of the down.
Take note of the differences between thread counts and you will definitely get your hands on a down comforter which suits you best.
Having a good down comforter is a great thing for not only your sleep but your entire life. The way we sleep determines how our day will go. The amount of time, the routine we keep, and yes, what covers us. There is nothing worse than having a comforter that isn’t doing the trick and ultimately not letting you get a good night’s rest.
Out of all the household purchases that you will have to make in your time as an adult, there are few that determine if you will sleep well or not. As cold people, this is such a hard battle to fight. It is hard enough to keep warm during the day, so sleeping should be a time where you can truly relax and stay warm. You should not wonder if you’ll wake up in cold the next day or not. With good thread counts, you won’t.
