Vitiello is professor emeritus of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington, a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and a fellow (health sciences) of the Gerontological Society of America.
He has previously served as chair of the National Institutes of Health’s sleep disorders advisory board, president of the Sleep Research Society, and scientific program chair of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. He has served on numerous committees and advisory boards, including serving on the board of the National Sleep Foundation (2004-2009). He is also editor-in-chief of Sleep Medicine Reviews and has served as an editorial board member of numerous other scientific journals.
