What color should I paint my bedroom?
There is not much more I love than a good night’s sleep. I want my sleeping space to be perfectly tuned to give me the best rest possible. I know that there are certain aspects often overlooked when setting up a bedroom, one of which is color.
You may think that you can simply pick any stylish color for your bedroom, but there are colors that are more suitable than others when creating a relaxing space. I know it can be hard to do interior design, and I realize that it is not my best skill. But it is good to know which colors are best suited for a bedroom.
What color is best for my bedroom?
Your bedroom is the most personal space in your home, and you will likely spend a lot of time here. First and foremost, the colors that you choose should be welcoming to you. I have tried colors in my bedroom that I was not entirely happy with, and it was a big mistake. They wore on me and eventually drove me mad. So, most importantly, make sure that these colors are something you can stand behind for a long time.
Your bedroom colors should also compliment the other colors around your house. This does not mean they have to match exactly, but they also should not outright clash. Incorporating the accent colors of the other rooms into your bedroom palette is a great way to create a cohesive and unified design. There should be a flow and consistency. This is purely a design rule, but it is always a good thing to keep in mind.
One thing that will help you choose a color for your bedroom is to decide what kind of mood you want to set in the room. I like my bedroom to be a peaceful and relaxing place where I can get away from the world and let my worries slip away. It helps me get to sleep when I am at ease and as relaxed as possible.
This is why I typically choose soothing colors for my bedroom. I prefer a neutral palette that is somewhat muted and calming. You can still liven up the room through use of color in your decoration, but neutral paint allows you to have a variety of options and keeps your base simple.
Green
You are in luck if you are a fan of green. Green is considered one of the best colors for painting bedrooms. This is because green has both cool and warm elements. There are so many different shades and hues of green to choose from. Your room can range from a dark and cozy warm space to a light and breezy relaxing space when using green.
Green also works with both modern and traditional design elements. There are plenty of complimenting colors that work with green, so you can better customize your bedroom space.
Red
Red, on the other hand, is a color that you may want to steer away from. Red is a stimulating color and can quickly become overwhelming. Red brings energy to the room and is known for raising adrenaline. If you want to go with a red hue, you should err on the side of a muted red, or only use it as an accent wall. It can be hard to match furniture with bright and vibrant reds, as many wood tones will clash pretty drastically.
Yellow
This is also true for shades of yellow. I love yellow, and it is my favorite color, so this is advice I had to take to heart. A muted or played down yellow may introduce a light and relaxed appeal while a bright yellow may be overbearing and make your bedroom anything but easygoing. Brighter and more vibrant shades of yellow are also energizing.
Blue
If you opt for the blue side of things, you can get away with a bit more. There are plenty of shades of blue that are ideal for cool and soothing looks. Dark blues can be an elegant backdrop for artwork while muted shades are perfect for a cozy and soft feel.
Psychologically, colors have an affect on us. There have been many studies that show how colors can affect our mental state. There are charts you can look at for reference. For a bedroom, it is wise to choose colors that are more calming and relaxing, such as blue. Blue is also associated with calmness. Some suggest that being in an environment that is blue can help to reduce blood pressure and decrease heart rate.
There are even studies performed where they measure how much sleep is typically achieved in different colored rooms. Looking at the results, you can see that some colors tend to let people sleep upward to 8 hours while others are closer to five. This shows that the color of your bedroom can have a large effect on the quality and length of your sleep.
Most professionally styled rooms will have a good combination of colors and designs. Look through books, blogs, and magazines to find colors you like in bedrooms that have been professionally arranged. These can help give you a good idea of the colors and combinations that work well in various bedrooms with different kinds of furniture.
So, what to do
While I love lots of different colors and tend to favor a bright and energetic feel, I would recommend a nice calming green or blue for a more relaxing experience; something more neutral that can work with your furniture selections. Think about what colors you like, and look at what professionals have done to get great ideas.
