Trying to keep your bedroom dust free can seem like a never-ending struggle — one you may often feel like you are losing. Dust seems to come out of nowhere and for a long time, I could never understand why.
Where the heck was it even coming from? And why did it always want to gather in my bedroom of all places?
If you are reading this, you likely know that this particular struggle is real. All too real, if we’re being honest. But as I learned more about what causes my bedroom to be filled with so much gross dust. I also learned several techniques for battling this dusty plague.
Here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way about how to keep your bedroom dust free.
Why Is My Bedroom So Dusty?
Dusty bedrooms can be a big problem for many people. For me, it is an annoyance and something that I want to get cleaned right away. This is because I have the need to keep things tidy.
But for others, a dusty room can affect health. If you have specific allergies or asthma, you could be in danger if the dust in your bedroom is out of control.
Dust can contain molds, fibers, and dander from animals as well as little bugs known as dust mites. These mites live in fabrics and often die in cold temperatures and thrive in the heat and the humid temperatures of the summer.
If a home is kept warm and humid during winter, dust mites can even live through that season and contribute to even more dust.
Floating dust that you can see flickering in the sunlight are dead mites and their waste mixed in with all of these other elements, making a concoction that is pretty gross if you think about it.
These particles are not only gross, but they can contribute to an allergic reaction and make your life miserable. If your bedroom is particularly dusty, this can make your time in this room miserable, and given that a bedroom is a place you will spend most of your time this is no good.
And here’s the reason
This is why it is important to know how to maintain a clean and dust-free bedroom through vigilant cleaning and preemptive measures.
With an active cleaning and reduction of dust, you can work to reduce allergic reactions and potential asthma and make your room less attractive to cockroaches.
One of the first steps you can take to reduce the amount of dust in your room is to reduce the number of spaces where your dust can accumulate.
To start, you should clear out your entire room and take stock of all thing things that are completely necessary to have in theirs. If you can find anything to remove, it will help to reduce the production of dust.
With fewer spaces for the dust mites to breed and make waste, you will have less dust being produced.

What else?
Dust mites love living in cloths and fabrics, so closets are large breeding grounds. If it is possible, empty your closets. If you have a place to store all of these things, it is best to store them out of the bedroom.
You can also seal the closet to make sure that the dust produced there does not fill your bedroom with more dust.
If you are not able to store your closet items and clothing outside of the bedroom, you can seal your clothing in zipped plastic bags and boxes. Storing clothing like this rather than just hanging free gives the mites and mold less opportunity to take hold in your items and produce more dust.
Keep Your Bedroom Dust Free
Since mites and dust love cloth, removing carpet is a great way to reduce the dust produced in any room. A bedroom is no exception, so if you can pull the carpet out, will take a large step to have your bedroom be dust-free.
A room with carpet can make proper and complete dust control nearly impossible. The longer and shaggier the carpet, the more space there is for the mites and dust to gather and produce more and more dust.
This makes removing carpets one of the most proactive and the best thing you can do for dust reduction.
Health experts even weigh in on the subject and say that hardwood floors are the best options for flooring for your health. Carpets simply trap too much dust to be good for asthma, allergies, or cleanliness in general.
What else can you do?
Regular and complete cleaning of hardwood and hard surfaces also gives you a leg up on being proactive against dust. Dust breeds more dust and getting rid of the dust that does accumulate quickly slows the rate that it builds up.

Wax, oil, and other sealing products on these surfaces also help keep them sterile and free of mites. But if your floors are not carpet or hardwood, you may have to find other ways to keep things sealed and clean.
Linoleum, for example, can peel up and have pockets underneath where mites gather and make more dust. With floors like this, it is important to make sure that the linoleum is sealed down properly and securely so as not to allow these spots for the mites.

Cleaning the room should be a weekly endeavor. Cleaning often makes sure that the mites never get a foothold and cannot overly produce the dust that will make your room overly dusty.

When you clean hard surfaces, you should use damp cloths that have water or oils on them to wipe away anything a dry cloth would miss.
If you keep carpet make sure to vacuum it carefully and completely often to remove the mites and dust that does gather. Also, vacuum the upholstery, and curtains if you have any.
Make sure that the filter in your vacuum is a good one that can catch all the little particles that some other vacuums may spit back out.
You can also wash curtains to give a bit of extra cleanliness in the room. Make sure to wash them in hot water to kill any mites that may be tucked into the curtains. You can also reduce dust production from beds by encasing box springs and mattresses in dust-proof covers.

Dusty rooms are caused by a number of things, but mostly you can look at mites, mold, and other particles gathering on surfaces.
The more surfaces you have, the more chance the mites have to make homes and make dust. The more cloth surfaces you have, the more you will have dust floating around.
Removing carpet, reducing the number of surfaces, and cleaning upholstery with high temperatures will keep the mites at bay.
